"Easy for you to say, Mr. 'Ends Justify the Means,' but I'm not leaving anyone behind," Jennifer retorted, her jaw set.

"The preservation of the state – or, in this case, our lives – requires difficult choices, sometimes sacrifices," Machiavelli explained, his voice devoid of emotion.

"So, what, you'd just shove me into the spike pit if it meant you got out?" she challenged, raising an eyebrow.

"Hypothetically, if your demise guaranteed my survival and the subsequent ability to free others, it would be a calculated risk," he admitted coolly.

"Well, that's just messed up. I'd rather go down swinging, trying to save everyone," Jennifer stated, her voice firm.

"A noble sentiment, perhaps, but often a fatal one; I pray your idealism doesn't become our shared undoing," Machiavelli sighed, resuming his examination of the room.
